Sebastien Pocognoli’s two‑year pact aims to thrill the Tartan Army

Sebastien Pocognoli has been confirmed as Scotland’s new head coach, signing an initial two‑year contract on 16 August 2026, succeeding Steve Clarke. The appointment was announced at 22:43 and updated at 22:47, and the former Belgium international will now lead the Tartan Army.

Sebastien Pocognoli guided Union Saint‑Gilloise to the 2024‑25 Belgian title in his first season as head coach. He then moved to Monaco in October of the previous year, steering the club into the Champions League knockout phase before being dismissed after a seventh‑place Ligue 1 finish. The 39‑year‑old is a former Belgium international.

Why Scotland chose Pocognoli

The Scottish Football Association described him as the standout candidate after a data‑driven search. Chief football officer Craig Mulholland praised his aggressive, front‑foot style and called him one of Europe’s brightest coaches. Scotland becomes only the second nation to appoint a foreign manager since German Berti Vogts’ 2002‑04 reign, following Vogts’ earlier spell.

Pocognoli said the role is an ‘honour’ and expressed excitement about the Tartan Army’s passion, recalling the atmosphere at the World Cup in the USA. He noted his experience as a Belgium international will help him connect with Scottish players. He added that he will work with his staff to build a team the supporters can be proud of.

Implications for Scotland and Pocognoli

The appointment follows Steve Clarke’s record of leading Scotland to three major tournaments in the century. Pocognoli’s first assignment will be a Nations League campaign against Slovenia, North Macedonia and Switzerland, beginning in Ljubljana on 26 September. Success could cement his reputation at the international level while offering the Tartan Army a fresh tactical direction.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell called Pocognoli a ‘very impressive individual with a real desire to take on the role’. The new coach will inherit a squad eager to build on Clarke’s foundations and will aim to deliver more success for the nation.

The restructuring also saw the departure of Under‑21 coach Scot Gemmill and Under‑17 coach Brian McLaughlin, underscoring the breadth of change within the Association. Mulholland believes Pocognoli’s personality will allow him to connect with the group of players.

The appointment marks a new St era for Scottish football, linking Belgian expertise with the hopes of the Tartan Army. Both sides now look ahead to the upcoming Nations League fixtures.
