Scott McTominay's comeback fuels Napoli hopes after heart treatment

Scott McTominay stepped onto the training pitch at Napoli on Wednesday, marking his first session since a heart procedure that saw the 29‑year‑old Scotland international undergo corrective ablation in September. The midfielder, who previously posted on Instagram that he would not be long away, was cleared after further diagnostic tests.

Heart condition diagnosed and treated

The player was diagnosed with a mild, benign arrhythmia in September and received corrective ablation treatment at Spire Manchester Hospital. The procedure was declared a success and doctors prescribed a period of rest before rejoining the Serie A side.

Napoli confirm fitness ahead of Frosinone

Napoli confirmed on Wednesday that McTominay had been cleared for duty after additional check‑ups, posting pictures of him training alongside teammates. A short club update read: “On Wednesday, Scott McTominay underwent further diagnostic tests, which showed that he is fit to play. (He) therefore resumed training with the rest of the team after the period spent training separately.”

McTominay, a former Manchester United man, has featured twice this season, coming off after 56 minutes against Como before his heart issue was detected. He then missed the next three games and the recent international break with Scotland, where new boss Sebastien Pocognoli has won just one of his first four matches.

With a weekend clash against Frosinone looming, Napoli’s medical staff stress that caution remains maximum. Coach Gennaro Allegri can now begin evaluating his condition, and the possibility of seeing him in the squad against Frosinone is concrete, though a bench start appears most likely.

Italian reports note that more than a month has passed since his last official appearance on 30 August against Como, and the countdown to his return has finally zeroed. Clinical examinations and effort tests gave the hoped‑for response, confirming his fitness while underscoring the need for careful management.

The most plausible scenario foresees McTominay beginning on the bench with the prospect of a cameo in the final minutes, allowing him to regain match sharpness gradually.

His return adds depth to Napoli’s midfield options and demonstrates the successful handling of a potentially career‑threatening condition, offering a morale boost ahead of upcoming fixtures.
