Schröder keeps Tedesco in contention despite Bologna release

Sport director Rouven Schröder told that Domenico Tedesco remains on Borussia Mönchengladbach’s shortlist for the head‑coach vacancy created by the Aus of Eugen Polanski on Sunday morning, even though the 41‑year‑old was only released a few days earlier by Italian Serie A club Bologna.

The decision was taken on Sunday morning, when Schröder announced the Aus of Polanski and opened the search for a successor. At that moment Tedesco was still under contract with Bologna, having joined the Italian Erstligisten in the summer. He had previously spent just under six months on the sidelines of Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Only a few days later Bologna confirmed his release.

Schröder’s big‑thinking approach

Schröder told, “I think we as Borussia can think big and try things that may not seem possible at first glance.” He added that finding the right coach does not depend on a single day. The sport director said the club is willing to explore options that might appear unconventional.

He said the Polanski successor must fit the club, understand the Bundesliga and the squad, and bring a clear idea to extract more from the combination. Knowledge of the league and the players is essential,

Tenure not a deal‑breaker

Schröder stressed that Tedesco’s short spell at Bologna, which began in the summer, is not a disqualifier. He also noted that the coach’s half‑year stint at Fenerbahçe does not automatically rule him out. The average tenure nowadays is roughly one year, so each case must be judged individually. “I do not select a coach based on whether he has been at the same club for six or nine years,” he explained.

According to, no conversation with the 41‑year‑old has taken place yet. Schröder acknowledged that contact could still be made, especially as the new coach should be ready for the international break starting next week. He stressed that the club will not rush the decision and will use the pause to evaluate candidates thoroughly. The search therefore remains open.
