Schalke turn to Austrian Wöber to revive Bundesliga hopes

Schalke 04 have signed Austrian defender Maximilian Wöber on a free transfer to plug a left‑sided centre‑back gap and bolster their limited budget ahead of the Bundesliga season, after Leeds United terminated his contract and he flew to the club’s training camp in Neustift.

The 28‑year‑old arrived immediately, packing his belongings and heading to the Austrian‑based camp in Neustift to start preparations for the upcoming season. He joined teammates already training there.

Schalke 04 pursued Wöber because the free deal preserves their limited transfer budget while adding a left‑sided centre‑back. The club sees him as a cost‑effective solution to a defensive need.

The agreement is a one‑year contract with an appearance‑triggered extension, making it heavily performance‑based given his recent injury record. The clause ties future pay to his playing time.

“It was stressful,” Wöber told . “I received the green light relatively spontaneously. The message was: ‘Pack your things and come to training camp.’” He described the move as a carefully considered chance to revive his Bundesliga career.

Wöber’s last Bundesliga spell was a loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 2023/24 season, where he made 25 appearances and scored twice while playing centrally and at left‑back. A permanent transfer did not materialise for financial reasons.

He then signed for Werder Bremen, but injuries limited him to three league outings, a period he called a “nightmare spell involving plenty of bad luck and one or two poor decisions.” He added that he trained throughout the holiday and feels as fit as he has in the past two years.

At Schalke he is expected to challenge Hasan Kuruçay for the left‑sided centre‑back role. His natural left foot suits both a back three and a back four, and he noted the club’s defensive philosophy mirrors that of Red Bull Salzburg, where he spent 109 matches.

The free transfer also frees payroll space, allowing Schalke to extend Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko’s contract. German football journalists have already suggested Wöber could become one of the top signings of the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign.

Wöber aims to regain full fitness, reach the appearance threshold that triggers his contract extension, and prove that his Bundesliga career is far from finished. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and said he approaches the task with a smile.
