Schalke lock in Bosnian veteran Džeko with new deal
Edin Džeko has signed a new one‑year contract with Schalke 04, extending his stay in Gelsenkirchen until the summer of 2027 after initially joining the club on a six‑month deal in January. The Bosnian striker, who arrived on a short‑term contract for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, will now remain for another year.
The Bosnian initially joined the Gelsenkirchen outfit in January on a six‑month deal that ran until the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign. That short‑term agreement gave the club a chance to assess his impact before committing to a longer stay.
“Since arriving at Schalke in the winter, I have been part of a fantastic team and experienced the incredible support of the fans. Winning promotion to the Bundesliga ranks among the highlights of my career. It was unbelievable,” Džeko said.
In the 2. Bundesliga, Džeko recorded six goals and three assists in just 11 appearances, a contribution that proved decisive in the club’s successful promotion push.
His performances helped Miron Muslić’s side secure promotion, underlining why Schalke pursued the veteran forward to add experience and firepower to the squad.
The 40‑year‑old also captained Bosnia and Herzegovina at the FIFA World Cup 2026, bringing a wealth of international leadership to the German club.
“Football has made me happy and driven me throughout my life. I am still hungry, and I want to help our team in the Bundesliga too,” Džeko added, signalling his ambition to aid Schalke’s top‑flight campaign.
