Schalke eyes further signings despite tight finances before Deadline Day

At the club’s training ground, officials pore over spreadsheets while the transfer window ticks down, signalling that FC Schalke 04’s recruitment drive is already well advanced but still vulnerable to the looming Deadline Day. The club’s financial situation, however, looms large over any final moves.

Financial constraints shape plans

Schalke must prevent its negative equity of €96.6 million from rising further before the end of the year, or risk a three‑point deduction. Current spending leaves a shortfall of roughly €5.5 million, according to the latest figures.

Sporting director Frank Baumann warned that the club’s economic targets for 31 December have not yet been met, adding that a larger sale is likely required to close the gap.

Potential departures include forward Moussa Sylla, who has only received informal inquiries, while other key players such as Adil Aouchiche, Soufian El‑Faouzi and Mertcan Ayhan would only leave for “immorally high” offers. A loan abroad appears more realistic for defender Christian Gomis.

Despite the pressure, Schalke’s squad for the upcoming Bundesliga season is already bolstered by recent arrivals Satoshi Tanaka, Junior Dina Ebimbe, Junior Adamu, Maximilian Wöber and Robin Gosens, and internal assessments deem the current roster broadly fit for top‑flight competition.

Additional revenue streams from merchandising, sponsorship and ticket sales have reportedly performed better than expected since early July, offering a modest cushion to the financial deficit.

If the club’s fiscal conditions improve, a further offensive addition could still materialise, preferably as a last‑minute loan without a purchase option,
