Schalke end 1,203‑day drought with long‑awaited Bundesliga win
Schalke secured a 3‑1 victory over Union Berlin on Friday the 11th, ending a 1,203‑day winless run in the Bundesliga and delivering their first triumph since rejoining the top flight. The win also snapped a two‑match goalless spell and lifted the side's morale after a goalless draw with the champions Bayern Munich the previous week.
Gosens opens the scoring
Robin Gosens, facing his former club, gave Schalke the early lead. Adil Aouchiche then doubled the advantage, and Maximilian Wober added a third to seal the win. Tim Skarke reduced the deficit for the hosts in stoppage time.
Long drought finally broken
The victory ended a 1,203‑day period without a Bundesliga win for Schalke. Their last goal had come on 27 May 2023 in a 4‑2 loss to RB Leipzig, and their previous win had been on 5 May 2023 against Mainz. This match also marked their first win of the current season.
Confidence after Bayern draw
Having held the current champions Bayern Munich to a goalless draw in the previous round, Schalke entered the game with renewed confidence. Coach Miron Muslic praised the importance of the point taken from the champions and said the victory provides fresh impetus in the league.
Berlin’s next challenge
Union Berlin suffered their second defeat in three rounds and will travel to Bayern Munich next Friday. The loss underscores the difficulty of their early campaign and sets up a tough encounter against the title‑holders.
