Sassuolo loan could make Bowie Scotland’s next striker
Four league goals in a half‑season at Hellas Verona, including strikes at the Allianz Stadium and San Siro, have set the stage for Kieron Bowie’s season‑long loan to Sassuolo with an option to buy, a move that could boost his case to become Scotland’s leading striker.
Bowie arrived at relegation‑threatened Hellas Verona from Hibernian midway through the previous campaign, scoring four Serie A goals that earned draws against Juventus and champions Inter, yet he could not stop the Gialloblu’s slide to the lower division.
Steve Clarke omitted the 23‑year‑old from Scotland’s World Cup squad, a disappointment for the Kirkcaldy‑born forward as his nation battled in the United States.
The transfer was confirmed last week; Francesco Palmieri, Sassuolo sporting director, said, “In just a few months in Italy he has shown his value. He has important characteristics and is still quite young. I’m convinced he can contribute to this group and help us take steps forward.”
Bowie joins fellow Scot Josh Doig at the Mapei Stadium, replicating Doig’s path from Hibernian to Verona before moving to Sassuolo a year‑and‑a‑half earlier.
They are two of seven Scottish players currently in Serie A, alongside Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour at Napoli, Lewis Ferguson at Bologna, Che Adams at Torino and Lennon Miller at Udinese.
Alberto Aquilani, Sassuolo’s new manager, praised Bowie, stating, “He’s a young and important player, with useful abilities that we are lacking right now. He will definitely give us a hand.” He also referenced his admiration for De Zerbi’s tactics.
Bowie will compete for the striker role with Andrea Pinamonti, while veteran Nemanja Matic, winger Armand Lauriente and club legend Domenico Berardi provide experience in the Neroverdi squad.
Sassuolo, owned by the Squinzi family of Mapei, operates from the modest Mapei Stadium after leaving its small town ground; only five Serie A clubs own their stadiums, making the venue a distinctive feature of the club’s launch‑pad reputation.
The story was reported by ALASDAIR MACKENZIE, published at 23:48 BST on 5 August 2026 and updated a minute later, underscoring the Scottish forward’s rising profile in Italian football.
