São Paulo secure Pedro Lima on loan as Wolves cut costs
São Paulo have completed a loan move for 20‑year‑old right‑back Pedro Lima from English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, finalising the agreement on the last day of Brazil’s transfer window. The deal is reported as a free loan lasting until the end of the current season, with a clause that could extend the stay based on appearances.
São Paulo’s need for a right‑back
The Brazilian club turned to Lima as injuries have left its right‑back department depleted. He arrives as a potential solution for a sector hit by multiple absences and will compete with Lucas Ramon and Aurélio Buta for minutes. The loan adds to a busy window in which São Paulo also secured Victor Sá, Newton, Aurélio Buta, Iago Borduchi and Domingos Duarte.
Wolves’ wage relief and player prospects
Wolverhampton, fighting a relegation battle after a 19‑match winless run, agreed to shoulder the majority of Lima’s salary. One source says the English club will cover 60 percent of his wages, while another mentions an equal 50‑50 split between the two sides. The loan is described as cost‑free for São Paulo, with no transfer fee involved.
The agreement also contains a performance‑related bonus that could trigger an extension of the loan until May of the following year. A separate report states the loan runs free until December, with an automatic renewal clause to May 2027 if Lima features in at least half of São Paulo’s matches.
Lima’s time at Wolves has been limited. He made 18 first‑team appearances and three for the under‑21 side, and this season featured only two outings – in the Championship and the English League Cup – the latest on 25 August against Sheffield. Competition from new signing Kieran Trippier further reduced his opportunities.
Before joining Wolves, Lima spent a short spell on loan at Porto B, where he logged nine games and recorded one assist. He originally broke through at Sport Recife and was sold to Wolverhampton on 17 June 2024 for a fee reported as €10 million (approximately R$60 million), signing a five‑year contract that made the transfer the most valuable sale from Brazil’s Northeast region.
For São Paulo, Lima offers a physically robust option capable of delivering crosses and supporting attacks, addressing a clear need in the squad. For Wolverhampton, the loan eases the wage bill and provides the youngster with a chance to rebuild his trajectory through regular playing time in Brazil.
