Sané Ex-Weltmeister faces dwindling DFB chances
Jean Catuffe/GettyImages – In Jürgen Klopp’s two‑part 44‑man squad there was no Platz for Leroy Sané, leaving the 30‑year‑old Ex‑Weltmeister’s DFB future in doubt and echoing the new national team manager’s preference for younger talent as the German side prepares for upcoming tournaments.
Younger prospects on the right
The new manager has identified Lennart Karl, an 18‑year‑old from FC Bayern, and Karim Adeyemi, 24, who plays for FC Barcelona, as potential right‑wing alternatives. Both are seen as long‑term prospects for the national side and fit the strategy of building a core for the Euro 2028 tournament.
By prioritising these emerging players, the coach signals a clear shift away from relying on the 30‑year‑old former World Cup winner, reinforcing the view that Sané’s place in the squad is unlikely.
Veterans and current form
Among the seasoned cohort, Serge Gnabry currently holds the edge, having captained Germany in a 2‑0 Nations League victory over Serbia, stepping in for Joshua Kimmich. His recent leadership role and versatility keep him in contention for the upcoming squad.
At Galatasaray Istanbul, Sané has featured off the bench in roughly half of the matches, and he has yet to register a goal in seven competitive appearances this season. The Turkish side sits second in the Süper Lig after six games, having scored 13 goals and displaying solid attacking play, yet Sané’s personal contribution remains limited.
Littbarski’s scepticism and the odds
Former World Cup winner Pierre Littbarski, now 66, told RAN that “I think it will be difficult for the young man to come back.” He added that Sané is not even a regular starter at Galatasaray, so “a lot would have to happen” for a recall.
During the disappointing World Cup in the summer, Sané became a scapegoat for the nation, though much of the blame lay with former manager Julian Nagelsmann, who persisted in using him on the right flank despite inconsistent form at Schalke. Realistically, a miracle would be required for Sané to don the DFB shirt again, and Littbarski’s scepticism appears well founded. Until his club form improves dramatically, the DFB’s younger cohort will likely dominate the selection pool.
