Sampdoria’s Serie B gamble on former Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne

Voormalig Napoli-ster Lorenzo Insigne has arrived in Italië to fill Sampdoria’s attacking void after a season spent just above the relegation line. The 35‑year‑old brings a proven record in Serie B and top‑flight football.

Vandaag om 23:572min Praat mee! Insigne has found a new employer, swapping Pescara for an adventure at Sampdoria. He signed a one‑year contract with an option for a further season.

Sampdoria currently competes in Serie B, having finished the previous campaign barely clear of the drop. The club is enduring a second consecutive season of financial and sporting challenges after its last appearance in the top tier in 2022/2023.

Insigne spent 2009‑2022 at Napoli, playing 434 matches for the Partenopei and tallying 122 goals and 95 assists. He formed a feared front line alongside Dries Mertens, Gonzalo Higuaín, Edinson Cavani and Victor Osimhen.

In the summer of 2022 he chose a free‑transfer adventure with Toronto FC in Major League Soccer. The move saw him compete in the North American league under the banner of Toronto FC.

At the end of the 2025/2026 season he was without a club and returned to Europa, signing in January 2026 for his former side Pescara. After a loan spell there in 2011/2012, he made thirteen appearances, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

All of Insigne’s matches for Pescara were in Serie B, the second level of Italian football, and he will continue at that level with Sampdoria, which also plays in Serie B next season.
