Sammer demands radical step for Nagelsmann after coach exit

In the studio of the Sky show “Sammer & Basile – the Hagedorn Talk” Matthias Sammer looks ahead after the abrupt dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann as national team coach. The 39‑year‑old coach is left without a new assignment, while Sammer gives him a clear but unusual piece of advice.

Uncertain Future after the Dismissal

After his dismissal as national team coach, Nagelsmann is currently without a managerial position. The disappointing performance at the World Cup and the subsequent DFB dismissal have worsened the situation. In the show, Sammer emphasizes that he wants to closely follow Nagelsmann's career, but without additional people around him.

“But with no one else around him. Only with him,” Sammer explains in the interview. With this, he is specifically targeting the advisory agency Sports 360, which has supported Nagelsmann so far.

Radical Advice for the Surroundings

Sammer, 59, urges the former Bayern and Leipzig coach to talk more in the future with people who have no personal interests. “He should speak with someone who no longer has any personal interests in such a conversation, but who can point out things to him,” he says.

The former 1996 European champion does not doubt Nagelsmann's professional abilities. He describes the 39‑year‑old manager as a “first‑class professional” who has delivered convincing work at Hoffenheim and Leipzig.

Nevertheless, he misses the decisive final step that Nagelsmann never took during his time at FC Bayern. Sammer warns that the unused potential of the coach would be a shame for the country.

As possible interlocutors, Sammer mentions Lothar Matthäus, Stefan Effenberg, Dietmar Hamann and Friedhelm Funkel. His specific advice is: “I would advise him to consult a football sage and talk with him.”

The advice of the former DFB sports director could significantly influence Nagelsmann's next career decision and thus also shape the future direction of the German coaching landscape.
