Sambu Marsoni shines against Marmoush and delivers a pass to Malawi

Dender's right‑back, Sambu Marsoni, experienced two memorable international evenings: he held his own against Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush in the 0‑0 draw against Egypt, then he provided an assist in Angola's 3‑1 victory over Malawi.

Memorable international debuts

Called up by Angola, Marsoni played two qualifying matches for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, within international football. The first encounter, against Egypt, ended in a 0‑0 draw where he faced striker Omar Marmoush. The second, against Malawi, saw Angola win 3‑1 thanks to his decisive assist.

“In our first match, we faced a great nation of world football and we were more than just a sparring partner. We showed that we had the tools to counter them and to go for a result, which we did with that solid 0‑0,” the player explains after the duel with Marmoush.

An impact that boosts confidence

Back in Belgium at the end of the week, Marsoni says these performances are a real boost. “It’s an extra boost because I tell myself I haven’t worked in vain,” he says, convinced that his international status will benefit Dender.

He also mentioned the disappointment of not having joined Le Mans this summer. “The two clubs couldn’t reach an agreement. I can’t hide that it was disappointing because Ligue 1 is still a major league, but it’s part of a player’s career,” he added.

Dender, relegated this season to the Challenger Pro League, is nevertheless enjoying a strong start to the campaign. “If we manage to be consistent, we can aim for an immediate bounce‑back. That would be a great thing for the club and its supporters,” the full‑back affirmed.

Sébastien Sterpigny, RWDM and regional sport specialist, highlighted that the international window allowed several Challenger Pro League players to feature for their national teams, Marsoni being the most visible example.

Marsoni now dreams of taking part in the AFCON and the World Cup. “Our ambition is clearly to qualify for this AFCON. I think that with the qualities we have, it’s a competition we should take part in every time,” he concludes with enthusiasm.
