Salah‑Eddine chooses Greek Super League, loan move to Panathinaikos
Anass Salah‑Eddine leaves AS Roma permanently and completes a season‑long loan to Panathinaikos, with the Greeks embedding a purchase option for four seasons. The medical examination and the official completion take place on Saturday evening in Athens, still before the closure of the Greek transfer window on 15 September.
Reason for the move
Italian media reported that at AS Roma the playing‑minute outlook for the 2002‑born left‑back was limited. The Greek Super League now offers him a permanent place, especially as Panathinaikos is top of the table after three matchdays. Moreover, the club participates in the Conference League, which means additional European experience.
Previously, Salah‑Eddine played, among others, for Ajax, FC Twente and PSV, meaning Panathinaikos gets his fifth professional club. PSV had earlier wanted to make a permanent transfer, but the player chose a chance in Italy. Later Olympiakos and West Ham United were mentioned, but those transfers did not materialise.
Terms of the loan agreement
The agreement concerns a season‑long loan with a purchase option for four seasons, as the Greek club demanded. The medical examination and the official completion take place on Saturday evening in Athens, after which a presentation is expected on Monday.
Sport, via Sport24, reports that the transfer will be finalised on Saturday evening in Athens, still before the closure of the Greek transfer window on 15 September. The Greeks can then, according to the agreement, secure the player for four seasons.
In the current season Salah‑Eddine has not yet played a minute for Roma; he has accumulated a total of three appearances and 153 minutes for the Italian club. Within the club he is often simply called Salah. During his previous loan spell at PSV he recorded 25 appearances, one assist, three yellow cards and one red card.
The Moroccan international, who has already played thirteen times for his country, gets through Panathinaikos the chance to prove himself both in the domestic league and at European level. For AS Roma the move means a relief for the squad and the possibility to possibly bring the player in permanently later. Eddine has already quickly adapted to the Greek way of life.
The formula for the transfer from Twente to AS Roma was completed in February 2025 for €8.5 million, with possible additional €2 million in bonuses. For the current loan, Panathinaikos proposes an amount of €1 million, linked to an optional purchase price of €16 million under certain conditions. These figures illustrate the valuation that both the Italian and the Greek club attach to the player.
This makes his registration in the Greek competition administratively straightforward.
