Saint‑Etienne’s gamble on Go Ahead Eagles star Jakob Breum
Jakob Breum’s impending transfer pits the disappointment of Go Ahead Eagles against the optimism of Saint‑Etienne, as the 22‑year‑old Danish midfielder prepares to leave the Dutch side for the French club’s Ligue 2 campaign. The midfielder’s departure follows a campaign in which he added six goals and six assists for the Eagles.
Merle Heppenhuis reported that Jakob Breum was not present at Go Ahead Eagles training because he was traveling to France to finalise his move to Saint‑Etienne. Saint‑Etienne compete in the second tier of French football, Ligue 2.
The departure is described as a blow for Go Ahead Eagles, who lose a player of Breum’s talents. Saint‑Etienne, meanwhile, expect the 22‑year‑old to aid their quest to return to Ligue 1 at the first time of asking.
In his most recent season with Go Ahead Eagles, Breum scored six goals and provided six assists across 37 appearances. The previous campaign, the 2024/2025 season, saw him net 11 goals and add five assists in 31 matches.
Over three seasons in the Dutch top flight, Breum amassed 105 games, 20 goals and 14 assists for Go Ahead Eagles. He also collected a KNVB Cup winner’s medal during the 2024/2025 season.
Before joining Go Ahead Eagles, Breum developed at Odense Boldklub in Denmark. He has also been capped at youth level by the Denmark national team.
Ben Jackson also confirmed the transfer details in his reporting. Both journalists highlight the contrasting impact of the move on the Dutch and French clubs.
