Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney buy The Turf to protect Wrexham
On September 22, Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed the purchase of The Turf pub beside the Racecourse Ground, a move aimed at protecting the future of Wrexham AFC after years of community‑driven growth.
Wrexham AFC, the oldest football club in Wales, was founded at the then‑named Turf Hotel in October 1864. The pub, run by landlord Wayne Jones, has featured prominently in the award‑winning “Welcome to Wrexham” docuseries.
The club said the deal preserves the history and traditions of the historic public house inexorably linked to the Racecourse Ground and Wrexham AFC, bringing the club, stadium and pub under single ownership.
Future investment plans
Ownership consolidation opens the door to further investment, including enhancements to the fan zone on Mold Road. The Racecourse Ground, which staged its first Wales fixture in March 1877, remains the world’s oldest stadium still hosting international matches.
Minority investor Eric Allyn added, “Ever since we invested in Wrexham AFC through Red Dragon Ventures in 2024, the town, the community and the football club have become a second home. By bringing The Turf into the group, we are securing the long‑term future of the pub and preserving its history.”
Wayne Jones will continue to run The Turf as part of the agreement, ensuring continuity for patrons and supporters alike.
