Russian betting ties cast doubt on Pirlo's Italy coach appointment

Russian betting ties cast doubt on Pirlo's Italy coach appointment

On a crisp Tuesday morning, as the clock struck 11:01, Italy’s football world buzzed over the pending appointment of former midfielder Andrea Pirlo as head coach of the Azzurri, while the federation announced an investigation into his alleged connections with a Russian betting firm.

Sunday newspapers reported that the Italian football federation will launch an inquiry into Pirlo’s relationship with a Russian gambling company. The probe follows growing public scrutiny of the prospective coach.

According to dello Sport, federation chairman Giovanni Malagò has applied the brakes on the arrangement because Pirlo serves as a high‑profile ambassador for Fonbet. The club‑level endorsement conflicts with regulations that forbid advertising for bookmakers.

Advertising for a betting operator is prohibited under Italian sport law, and the fact that Fonbet is owned by Russian interests heightens the controversy. Authorities view the foreign ownership as a potential breach of ethical standards.

Italy and Russia have not enjoyed friendly diplomatic ties since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The political backdrop adds another layer of sensitivity to any commercial link between the two nations.

Pirlo’s lawyers contend that the Fonbet agreement was tied to his contractual obligations as United FC coach in Dubai, and that the contract would become void should he assume the Azzurri role. They argue the deal should therefore be dismissed.

Tuttosport notes that if the federation decides to part ways with Pirlo, former national team managers Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini are likely to receive a phone call from the Rome office. Both have previously expressed interest in returning to the job.

In response, veteran coaches Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola have each sent messages thanking the federation for the honour of being considered. Their statements underscore the prestige attached to the Italian job.

Italy’s schedule resumes at the end of September, when the Azzurri will face Turkey twice, as well as France and Belgium, in the Nations League’s extended international window. These fixtures will serve as early tests for any new coach.

More consequential commitments begin in March 2027, when qualification for the Euro 2028 tournament kicks off. The upcoming campaign will demand a stable leadership team to navigate the competitive landscape.
