Russell frames Shelbourne as underdogs against dominant Athlone Town

Russell's belief in his squad

Russell told that the task is ‘a massive challenge’, noting Athlone are double champions from last season and have continued that form. He added, ‘I have no doubt in the eyes of a lot they are the favourites going into this game’, but insisted his own players have the quality to win. He also noted that the squad has been reinforced this season, with new signings adding depth.

After two difficult results, including the recent derby loss, Russell said the cup week offers a ‘different level of excitement’ and a ‘good reset’. He stressed that the squad’s character and quality mean the defeats will not affect their approach, and that they have ‘enough to go and win the game’ on Sunday. He believes those lessons will sharpen their resolve and could be the edge needed against Athlone’s firepower.

In his first season, Russell hopes to add a fourth FAI Cup to Shelbourne’s Tolka Park tally. He recalled the teams’ 1‑1 draw earlier in the campaign and praised the growing rivalry, calling the final ‘the biggest game in the domestic game’ and a privilege to contest. He highlighted that both clubs have produced some of the country’s best players, raising the standard of the women’s game.
