Rummenigge says Bayern need not chase Wirtz now

Former Bayern board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the Abendzeitung that a move for German national player Florian Wirtz is currently not on the club’s agenda. He argued that the Munich side already possess sufficient options in the attacking midfield role, making a costly acquisition unnecessary.

Existing squad covers the position

Rummenigge pointed to Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry as the primary occupants of the role, adding that youngster Ismael Saibari provides further depth. With three capable players already in the line‑up, the board sees no justification for spending the sum a Wirtz deal would command.

Wirtz’s recent form in England

The 23‑year‑old joined FC Liverpool after turning down a summer 2025 move to Bayern, but his spell in England has been described as “difficult” and inconsistent. Rummenigge noted that the expectations placed on him at the Premier League club have not been met on a regular basis.

According to the former Bayern executive, the player’s decision to leave Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool was heavily influenced by the promise of a central role from then‑coach Arne Slot, rather than by financial considerations. He added that “there were no dramatic differences” in the financial terms offered.

Rummenigge also warned that any player must think carefully before making a career move, hinting that Wirtz’s own deliberations were thorough. He did not rule out a future transfer entirely, but stressed that the current composition of the Munich squad is the main obstacle to a high‑priced deal.

The Bayern supervisory board, as relayed by Rummenigge, believes that buying a fourth player for the same position would be imprudent given the existing talent pool. This stance reflects a broader strategy of prudent spending amid a market where transfer fees have escalated sharply.

While the door remains technically open for Wirtz to join Bayern at some later stage, Rummenigge’s comments make clear that, for the moment, the club’s priorities lie elsewhere.
