Flick vows Barcelona to bounce back against Alavés as squad rotation and defensive concerns loom

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick addressed the media ahead of the LaLiga clash with Alavés, stressing the need to restore winning form after two consecutive defeats. He highlighted the importance of managing player minutes, particularly for Brazilian winger Raphinha, who has been called up by Brazil for the upcoming international window. "If we could manage his minutes a bit, it would make me happy," Flick said, acknowledging the club’s limited control over his national team duties.
Flick also tackled the defensive frailties that have plagued the side, noting that the team currently relies on only two centre‑backs, Gerard Piqué and Pau Torres. He hinted at the possibility of using Frenkie de Jong in a deeper role and expressed a desire to find an additional solution before the winter transfer window opens. "We are trying to find another solution, and Frenkie can play there," he explained.
The manager praised the versatility of left‑back Alejandro Balde but admitted the young defender has yet to regain full confidence in the system. "He may not have the confidence he needs right now," Flick said, adding that a return to form is essential for the team's defensive stability.
On the right flank, Flick suggested that veteran Jordi Alba’s understudy, Fariñas, could be given a chance, describing him as "very intelligent" and deserving of playing time after a strong preseason. He also mentioned the gradual integration of Tounkara, who impressed during preseason and could see minutes with the first team.
Midfield dynamo Rodri’s call for greater composure resonated with Flick, who emphasized ball retention and possession as the keys to controlling matches. "When you control the game, you decide how to circulate the ball and limit the opponent’s chances," he asserted.
Looking ahead to the Alavés encounter, Flick remained optimistic, insisting the squad’s morale is high after a productive training session. "We have confidence in our strength and quality. Tomorrow we must show the right reaction against a well‑organized Alavés side," he concluded, reaffirming his belief that Barcelona’s tactical approach remains the best path forward.
While no immediate transfer was confirmed, Flick reiterated that the club continues to monitor the market and will act if a suitable central defender becomes available before the January window. "We always look for the best for the team. If we can do something, perhaps we will," he said.
