Rudi Völler defends Kimmich as unfair comparisons swirl

DFB-Sportdirektor Rudi Völler downplayed the heated debate over Joshua Kimmich’s role after the midfielder left the squad following a 1:1 draw with the Netherlands and a 0:1 home defeat to Greece at the midway point of the international match phase.

Kimmich's mixed performances

Like a Gros of the first‑team players, Kimmich featured in the 1:1 draw with the Netherlands but then delivered an unlucky Leistung against Greece. The midfield link with Felix Nmecha appeared dysfunctional, prompting criticism from fans and pundits.

His public plea to remain in the squad was ignored by national team manager Jürgen Klopp. In the subsequent match versus Serbia, Tom Bischof, Alexander Pavlovic and Florian Wirtz took centre stage in Germany’s midfield.

The episode sparked heated debates about whether the side would be better off without Kimmich. Klopp addressed the issue in press conferences, occasionally stumbling over his words.

Völler’s defence of the captain

DFB‑Sportdirektor Rudi Völler praised the 31‑year‑old Bayern Munich player, stating, “Jo Kimmich ist ein wunderbarer Kapitän”. He added, “Jo Kimmich ist ein wunderbarer Spieler und wird uns in den nächsten Jahren noch viel Freude bereiten”.

Völler argued that differing opponent strengths prevent a direct comparison of line‑ups. He noted the first two games were difficult, while Serbia proved a weaker opponent, allowing Germany to look stronger.

He suggested the players used in the opening matches “would probably also have won against Serbia”, calling the comparison “a bit unfair”. The contrast between public scepticism and Völler’s confidence underscores the ongoing debate.
