Roy Keane urges patience for 15‑year‑old as United reels from cup loss

Roy Keane’s candid warning to teenage prospect JJ Gabriel sits opposite Manchester United’s urgent need to bounce back after a 3‑2 Carabao Cup defeat, as Michael Carrick prepares his side for a Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Keane’s advice to Gabriel

Keane, the club’s former captain, said on the Stick to Football podcast: “Are you telling me he can’t wait? If you are 15 years of age and you’re talking about playing for Man United’s first team, just wait. Can you wait another six weeks if United get through the cup?” He added that United cannot “write off a cup game tonight and play a couple of young lads” because the club “needs wins right now”. The 15‑year‑old JJ Gabriel, who asked United to cancel his registration, was omitted from the matchday squad for the tie.

Carrick under pressure

Michael Carrick will hope for an immediate response from his side against Fulham on Sunday, with the club still reeling from the Carabao Cup exit to Brighton. The defeat has heightened scrutiny of Carrick’s position as manager, and United are keen to restore momentum ahead of the Premier League weekend.

Cup collapse at Old Trafford

United appeared on course to sail into the next round after going 2‑0 up in the opening ten minutes against the Seagulls. Brighton, however, mounted a comeback to claim a 3‑2 victory at Old Trafford, leaving Carrick’s job under pressure.

McKenna’s out‑of‑work watch

Kieran McKenna, the 40‑year‑old former Ipswich Town boss, watched the Carabao Cup clash from the directors’ box at Old Trafford. He has been out of work since June and previously worked alongside Carrick as part of United’s coaching staff before taking the Ipswich job in December 2021. During his tenure Ipswich were promoted to the Premier League twice before he left this summer. United were linked with appointing the Northern Irishman as manager two years ago, but chose to extend Erik ten Hag’s contract.

On stepping down, McKenna said: “I now look forward to taking a break from management and dedicating some time to my family, who have been with me every step of my career so far.”

Sport writer Jake Bayliss, a senior sports journalist, posted the piece on Sep 18, 2026; the story shows a view count and two images. OUR MAN UTD fans hope the side can return to winning ways as they head into the Premier League action this weekend.
