Rooney warns Manchester City faces massive punishment over FFP breach

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has voiced his belief that Manchester City will receive a "massive punishment" after being found guilty of 114 out of 115 Financial Fair Play charges. He told the Stick to United podcast that the sanction could be severe enough to see the club relegated.

The Premier League’s FFP investigation concluded that Manchester City breached the regulations on 114 counts. The club now faces a range of possible penalties, including a fine, a transfer ban, points deductions, expulsion from competitions and the stripping of Premier League titles.

Rooney’s reaction

Rooney said, "In terms of the punishment, I think they'll get relegated," adding that a points deduction could ensure the drop. He also questioned whether other clubs would pursue further action against Manchester City. While acknowledging the difficulty of a relegation, he noted that the club would likely return to the Championship quickly.

Beyond the sporting consequences, Rooney expressed discomfort at the idea of accepting an additional Premier League medal should Manchester City’s titles be revoked. "I wouldn’t feel comfortable accepting another Premier League medal, if I’m honest. I don’t think we deserve it," he explained, recalling that United were six or seven points clear with four or five games remaining.

He reflected on the perspective of Manchester City players, saying they would be devastated if stripped of medals they believed they earned. "If those players have no understanding of what’s going on above, I’d be absolutely devastated," Rooney added.
