Ronaldo leaves training camp, FPF secures Nations League plan
In the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo's national team decision, the 41‑year‑old striker left the training camp of the Portuguese national team in Copenhagen, while the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) emphasized that preparation for the Nations League matches continues unchanged.
Ronaldo explains his decision on Instagram
The evening after his departure Ronaldo wrote on his Instagram channel: “In due time I will tell all Portuguese the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave the national team, for which I have always sacrificed myself.” He added that he now wishes Portugal and his teammates much luck, “without exception.”
The former captain emphasized that his decision should not be understood as an immediate retirement, but as a step that will be explained in more detail later.
Coach Jorge Jesus had already announced at a press conference that Ronaldo would not be in the starting lineup against Denmark and had sat on the bench the night before against Norway.
Jesus emphasized that there were no problems between him and the biggest star of the team and quoted Ronaldo: “If you want me to play, I will play. If you want me to sit on the bench, I’ll do that.”
FPF confirms departure and focus on Nations League
The Federação Portuguesa de Futebol released an official statement on Wednesday confirming Cristiano Ronaldo's immediate departure from the camp in Copenhagen.
Unexpected split: Ronaldo leaves the Portuguese camp in Denmark
The statement read: “Preparation for the matches against Denmark and Norway, the latter at Estádio do Dragão, will continue within the planned framework with the remaining 24 players.” The FPF added that the entire delegation places absolute focus on the upcoming commitments.
Several Spanish and Portuguese media reported that Ronaldo flew to Madrid in his private jet after his decision.
Ahead of the match, Ronaldo had remained on the bench for 90 minutes against Norway, although coach Jesus had originally planned about 30 minutes of playing time; the decision was made in favor of Gonçalo Ramos, who contributed the 2‑1 winning goal.
Further steps and lineup against Denmark
After his departure Ronaldo posted another Instagram entry, in which he explained that after a conversation with the president of the FPF he decided to leave the camp, and that he will share “the whole truth” in due time.
Jorge Jesus denies Ronaldo deal, the Ballon d’Or leaves Copenhagen
He wished his teammates luck for the two remaining Nations League games against Denmark and Norway.
Coach Jesus confirmed, despite the alleged agreement, that Gonçalo Ramos will occupy the starting lineup against Denmark if everything proceeds as planned.
The contradictory statements from Ronaldo and the coaching staff highlight the tension between the star player and the team management, while the FPF emphasizes that the sporting goals of the national team remain untouched.
