A few hours after leaving the Copenhagen stadium, the captain of Portugal posted a message on Instagram, confirming his departure from the camp without revealing the reasons, while promising to tell the truth to the Portuguese.

Official announcement on Instagram

In his statement, Cristiano Ronaldo writes: “After the national team coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the training camp.” He adds that he will return “in due time” to explain the reasons for his withdrawal.

Reactions from the staff and the manager

Jorge Jesus, the manager, first denied any conflict, stating that the player would normally take part in the activities. He reminded that he would decide alone on the use of each player, declaring: “I am the manager, I decide whether the player plays or stays on the bench.” Jesus also explained that the plan was to preserve Ronaldo for the upcoming matches, citing his experience in Saudi Arabia.

Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, met Ronaldo and the manager in order to defuse tensions, a meeting judged positive by both parties.

Ronaldo’s departure contrasts with his previous statements, where he had welcomed the “new era” under Jesus’s leadership and described the manager as a “perfect choice.” He had also expressed his support for the team after the victory over Wales.

The five‑time Ballon d’Or winner recalled his historic commitment to the national team, emphasizing that he has never considered retiring, but that circumstances have led him to leave the camp.
