Ronaldo breaks silence, clarifies his dispute with Jorge Jesus

In the press room in Lisbon on Tuesday evening, Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, issued a statement in which he finally detailed the dispute that had pitted him against Jorge Jesus, the Portuguese national team coach. The captain broke the silence that had hung over his abrupt departure from the national team, triggering a genuine media earthquake.

The facts behind the clash

Ronaldo had left the camp before the match against Denmark after staying on the bench for the entire game against Norway. Jorge Jesus, for his part, had publicly claimed that there was “no incident” and had left the door open for a return of the five‑time Ballon d’Or winner.

In his statement, the player first revealed that he had almost ended his international career the day after the World Cup elimination, even drafting a farewell letter. The Portuguese Federation persuaded him to stay, asking for his opinion on the future coach who was to succeed Roberto Martinez.

Exchanges and responsibilities

“It was the right option, as the results confirm,” wrote Ronaldo, emphasizing that Jesus was counting on him and that his presence was essential for the project. According to the Madeira native, the coach had offered him not to accompany the squad in Norway and Denmark, a proposal Ronaldo immediately refused.

Ronaldo recalled that, during the match in Norway, he had agreed to play 30 minutes, but was never called upon. “The rest belongs to history,” he said, adding that the coach had not kept his promise.

The player also acknowledged his share of responsibility, apologising for not going to greet the fans in Oslo, calling it an “error for which I am fully responsible”.

A meeting with Jesus and Simão Coutinho, Al‑Nassr’s sporting director, reportedly allowed a solution to be found: the coach was to publicly explain what had been agreed privately and acknowledge his mistake. Ronaldo specifies that he never demanded a public apology, but that the meeting ended with a hug and Jesus’s promise to confirm the statements at a press conference.

Finally, the footballer reassured his fans by reaffirming his availability “after serving the suspension that will be imposed on me,” thus ruling out any immediate retirement.
