Romano calls Manchester United‑Gavi link fake news amid midfield overhaul
Fabrizio Romano shares what he’s hearing about Manchester United’s alleged signing of Barcelona midfielder Gavi, but the transfer rumor collides with a stark denial. While Spanish outlets suggest a €55 million sale and United’s £40 million offer, Romano labels the story “fake news” and insists Gavi will stay at Barca.
The story was first reported by Chris Radburn via Reuters, by Daniel Feliciano, PM GMT+1, after he decided late to pursue sports journalism. He had previously worked with as a freelance contributor and translator, volunteered on several blog pages, and later joined Barnet FC’s social media team before launching a site covering football and MMA. The article’s platform prompts readers to Add Us, Log in, and includes sections titled De La What Signing.
Romano debunks the rumor
Romano said, “Some rumours from some Spanish outlet, many of you sent me. Gavi to Manchester United, absolutely fake news.” He added, “I don’t know where this is coming from, but Gavi is not leaving Barcelona, absolutely impossible.”
He explained that Barcelona are “more than happy with Gavi” and that a contract discussion could emerge in the coming months, but no move is imminent.
United’s midfield strategy
Reports in Spain suggested Barcelona would accept a sale for around €55 million (£47 million), while Manchester United are ready to offer roughly £40 million.
Manchester United have been prioritising a midfield rebuild all summer, adding Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans under Michael Carrick, alongside goalkeeper Karl Darlow and teenage winger Tynan Thompson.
The club remain keen to secure a third midfield signing before the deadline if the right opportunity arises.
Gavi, 22, has slipped down Barcelona’s pecking order after the arrival of Rodri, with Pedri, Frenkie De Jong, Fermin Lopez and Marc Bernal ahead of him.
He missed the better part of seven months last season with a knee problem before returning to help Barcelona win the La Liga title.
Germany’s Jürgen Flick, a known admirer of Gavi, said the Spaniard can play at number 6 or number 8 and praised his recent performances, stating he wants the player at United.
Separately, Bruno Fernandes is set to stay at Manchester United despite reported interest from Galatasaray.
