Roma faces €15m fine and UEFA restrictions for breaching Fair Play
Roma is under UEFA scrutiny for not having complied with the Financial Fair Play criteria, and now awaits decisions that could result in a fine and restrictions for European competitions. When UEFA set the parameters, the club led by Dan Friedkin had already discussed the issue in Copenhagen with Aleksander Ceferin.
The statements of Gasperini
During the market press conferences, coach Gian Piero Gasperini repeatedly referred to Financial Fair Play and the settlement agreement concluded four years ago with UEFA. According to Gasperini, the failure to respect the financial limits forced the management to revise their market decisions.
Roma president Dan Friedkin discussed the club’s financial situation with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin during the last European clubs assembly in Copenhagen. The topics covered included the dossier of the new stadium and the sustainability of the accounts.
Friedkin explained that the approach taken was to meet the requests of Gasperini with the aim of not depriving the coach of key players. He also emphasized that the priority is to find a balance in the accounts, reducing losses in recent years.
In recent years Roma has reduced losses by focusing on increasing revenues, linked to participation in the Champions League and the prospect of building a new stadium. ROMA has relied on a revenue increase tied to the Champions League, but it has not been enough to meet the budget target.
Possible UEFA sanctions
According to the site, the most likely scenario is a fine ranging from 10 to 15 million euros, accompanied by a restriction on squad composition for European competitions. It is not excluded that UEFA could impose a harsher sanction, up to exclusion from the 2027/28 season.
However, Ceferin reassured Friedkin that such a severe punishment is not inevitable, leaving open the possibility of a less burdensome solution. Friedkin therefore expressed confidence in the ability of the club to adapt to the requirements of UEFA.
