Roma chase pricey Fofana after Summerville’s Saudi exit
AS Roma have placed Malick Fofana, the 21‑year‑old Belg forward from Olympique Lyon, firmly on their transfer radar, with reports suggesting a fee near €35 million and a five‑year deal that would earn the player roughly €2 million a season for the upcoming campaign.
Roma’s hunt after Summerville’s exit
Earlier this summer AS Roma identified Oranje‑international Crysencio Summerville as their dream signing. The Dutch international ultimately joined Al Hilal, ending the Italian club’s pursuit. Gian Piero Gasperini even travelled to the Dutch capital in an attempt to persuade the winger personally. Summerville, a former Feyenoord and Leeds United player, was a key target for the Roman side.
Al Hilal secured Summerville for a multi‑million‑euro fee, confirming the club’s willingness to spend heavily on the former Feyenoord and Leeds United star. The transfer effectively closed the window on Roma’s initial plan to reinforce their attack.
The Italianen, now focusing on the 21‑year‑old Belg Malick Fofana of Olympique Lyon, stepped in after Summerville’s departure. Corriere dello Sport Lyon is prepared to discuss a transfer but first seeks certainty over its own European future. Lyon currently sit in the Champions League play‑offs against Fenerbahçe, having drawn the first leg 1‑1 on Wednesday. The decisive second leg is scheduled for 26 August.
Fofana featured for 91 minutes in the recent play‑off match. Lyon are reluctant to lose one of their main attackers ahead of that crucial return leg.
What the Fofana move could mean
AS Roma are now urging Lyon to cooperate earlier than the August deadline. The French club has indicated a price tag of roughly €35 million for their dribbling king. Negotiations have also reportedly involved representatives from Fofana’s camp. The Italiaanse side sees Fofana as a perfect fit for their tactical plans.
In Rome a five‑year contract is reportedly ready, offering the Belgian about €2 million per season. Gian Piero Gasperini has expressed that the club must act swiftly to secure the signing. He has repeatedly signalled his desire for an attacking upgrade since the summer.
After the disappointment of losing Summerville, Fofana has emerged as Roma’s primary candidate to deliver the desired offensive impulse. A successful deal would give the Italian side a fresh weapon while Lyon would need to replace a key player before their Champions League return.
