Rodri’s City contract talks on hold, says Fabrizio Romano

Contract negotiations between Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri have been paused, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. Rodri, 30, is entering the final twelve months of his Manchester City deal and is focusing on leading Spain at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.

Rodri was linked with a summer departure after Real Madrid showed strong interest. However, club president Florentino Perez decided against pursuing the midfielder this summer.

Rodri rejected an initial financial proposal and subsequently negotiated a fresh long‑term contract with Manchester City, but talks have now been put on hold while he concentrates on the World Cup. The pause comes as he prepares to lead Spain at the FIFA World Cup in North America.

City sporting director Hugo Viana faces a contract stand‑off with Rodri as the club plans its summer transfer strategy. Among the targets are a possible £200 million plus double signing of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and a bid for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali.

Tottenham are also competing for Tonali, who is expected to leave Newcastle United for a fee around £90 million. The midfielder’s departure would add to the Blues’ midfield rebuild.

With Rodri’s contract set to expire next summer, Manchester City may need to prepare for his potential free‑agent departure, similar to Silva’s exit. The club’s options will hinge on the outcome of the World Cup and the ensuing transfer window.
