Robin van Persie reveals who he saw as the strongest opponents

Robin van Persie recently spoke with the Spanish SPORT about his career as a top striker. He especially remembers the 5-1 victory over Spain at the 2014 World Cup, a match that will stay with him forever.

The toughest defenders according to Van Persie

Van Persie names Carles Puyol and John Terry as the toughest defenders he has ever encountered. “They were defensively very smart and gave you no moment of rest,” says the ex‑international. He also emphasizes the great mutual respect that existed during those duels.

The former striker praises Dirk Kuyt as the most underrated player he has ever played with on the field. “There are so many good players who do not always get the recognition they deserve. A footballer for whom I have always had a lot of respect is Dirk Kuyt,” Van Persie explains.

In that same 5-1 duel Van Persie says he scored the most beautiful goal of his career: a header over Iker Casillas. He added: “We played against the country that had won the previous World Cup, so we had enormous respect for them. The way we won and that goal made it an unforgettable evening.”

The reflections show how Van Persie values both the quality of top defenders and the effort of undervalued teammates. His comments underline that respect for opponents and recognition of mental strength are central in his memories of football.
