Robertson’s number three tribute to Ledley King marks Tottenham debut
Andy Robertson has completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur and will wear the iconic left‑back number three, a tribute to club legend Ledley King, abandoning the number 26 he traditionally wore at Liverpool, Hull City and Dundee United in his career.
Tottenham confirmed the shirt choice, displaying the number three on the official roster. The club supported the announcement with Images] and Getty Images.
Inside Tottenham Hotspur’s changing room a fresh number three jersey hangs beside a pair of boots, signalling Robertson’s arrival. The display underscores the club’s nod to tradition while the player embraces his own legacy.
At Liverpool, Hull City and Dundee United Robertson wore the number 26, a digit he says holds personal significance. The shift to three therefore marks a new chapter at Tottenham.

The move to number three reflects both respect for Ledley King’s legacy and Robertson’s national team identity. He hopes the shirt will become as memorable as his previous numbers.
“When I came here, I knew that the number 26 hasn't been used since the legend that is Ledley King and I wanted to respect that,” Robertson explained, referring to the Tottenham legend. He made the comment during his introductory press conference.
“Number three means a lot to me – that's my national team number,” he said, recalling his Scotland caps. “I've had so many good memories as number three for Scotland, so when I knew it was going to become available, it was a no‑brainer.”
“The number 26 is a really important number to me in my life and it will always stay like that,” Robertson added. “But number three is just as important and hopefully I can make as many memories in the number three shirt as I did in the 26.”
By blending respect for Ledley King’s legacy with his own international identity, Robertson aims to write a new chapter at Tottenham Hotspur. Fans will watch to see how the new number influences his performances.
