Roberto Carlos admits losing 99% of his fortune at the Summit
Roberto Carlos, the former right‑back of Inter and Real Madrid, told the Portugal Football Summit about the economic and personal difficulties he experienced after retirement, stating that he lost 99 % of the wealth accumulated during his career and personal investments.
Loss of wealth
Roberto Carlos explained that he had lost a large part of the wealth built up over years of success, stating: “I had problems with people who emptied my bank account”. Due to agents and family issues, he said he lost 99 % of everything he had earned from football.
The former player recalled his relationship with a former agent, describing it as a “serious problem” that worsened the financial situation. Family difficulties further impacted his balance sheet, reducing the remaining resources.
Warning for the new generations
During the speech, the 53‑year‑old delivered a message to young players, urging them not to repeat his mistakes. “I have made mistakes and for that I ask the younger ones not to make any more”, he said, emphasizing the importance of carefully choosing the people who manage one’s affairs.
Roberto Carlos lived a top‑level career in world football, collecting prestigious trophies and significant earnings both with Inter and with Real Madrid. Such a brilliant career was marked by a particularly difficult period on the personal and economic front.
In addition to the financial losses, he highlighted that family problems had a significant impact on his economic situation. These events affected his ability to manage the accumulated resources, exacerbating the personal crisis.
Roberto Carlos’s story at the Portugal Football Summit aims to raise awareness among the new generation about the value of prudent financial management, so that future generations can avoid similar economic traps.
