Rival Simeone fires warning as Anfield atmosphere ahead Wednesday
Rival manager Diego Simeone fires a warning ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League test at Anfield, insisting his side must brace for the Merseyside atmosphere. Liverpool return to the stadium after a 2‑0 win over Ipswich, while Atletico Madrid head in still smarting from a 3‑0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao.
Simeone's warning after Bilbao collapse
That concern follows Atletico Madrid’s damaging 3‑0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao, a game in which they conceded twice in the space of three second‑half minutes. The rival manager believes the opening stages on Merseyside will be fierce, demanding full concentration from a side that recently paid the price for switching off. Simeone fires a warning that the Anfield atmosphere will be unforgiving.
Last season’s opening Champions League fixture at Anfield saw Atletico fall 2‑0 behind inside six minutes. They recovered to level at 2‑2, only to leave with nothing after a late Liverpool winner in added time.
“I don’t think it was (a lack of) motivation what happened to us in Bilbao, it was a lack of awareness, switching off,” said Diego Simeone. “We are coming into a marvellous stadium, a great atmosphere, we have to look at the start of the game as it will be full on.”
Liverpool's confidence and Atletico's challenges
Liverpool return to Anfield on Wednesday night for a heavyweight Champions League test with Atletico Madrid after a 2‑0 win over Ipswich, the first victory of Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool.
Atletico have managed only one clean sheet in their last 16 Champions League matches and have lost each of their last five visits to England, underscoring the difficulty of coping with the Merseyside pressure.
In attack, Julian Alvarez has endured disruption after transfer speculation late in the window, while Jonathan David is still being eased in following his loan move from Juventus on 1 September. Simeone said: “Jonathan has only just arrived, Julian is getting better. I don’t see he could start tomorrow, but I am sure he could help at some point in the game.”
Atletico’s history at Anfield includes a dramatic 3‑2 victory after extra time in 2020, a result that remains one of Simeone’s standout European achievements. Simeone knows the venue can swing fortunes, making his warning all the more urgent.
The contrast between Liverpool’s momentum and Atletico’s need for a calmer start could decide the night, with the Anfield atmosphere set to test both sides before the Champions League test unfolds.
