Richard Hughes faces midfield crossroads as Aberdeen eye Nyoni loan
Aberdeen have put forward a season‑long loan request for Liverpool midfielder Trey Nyoni, with reports suggesting Swansea, Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers are also weighing permanent offers worth roughly £6‑7 million. Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director, will have to decide this summer.
Trey Nyoni, 19, saw only 20 minutes of Premier League action in the 2025/26 season and spent time in Premier League 2, highlighting his need for regular first‑team football. Under manager Arne Slot he struggled for consistent minutes, prompting calls for a move that would aid his development. His contract runs until 2030, making a loan a low‑risk option for Liverpool.
Liverpool’s midfield roster is further complicated by three players whose contracts expire in 2027: Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott. All three are approaching the end of their deals, and interest from abroad is already emerging. This situation creates a potential clear‑out scenario for the club.
Curtis Jones, 25, has been identified as a target for Inter Milan, indicating that the Italian side is monitoring his availability. Stefan Bajcetic has been linked with a possible move to Sevilla in La Liga, suggesting Spanish interest in his profile. Both clubs are scouting the Liverpool midfielders as part of their recruitment plans.
Harvey Elliott remains undecided, with no firm plan announced for the playmaker, who will be given a chance to impress manager Andoni Iraola on the preseason tour. His future therefore hangs in the balance alongside the other two contract‑expiring midfielders.
Richard Hughes now faces an agonising decision as multiple clubs show interest not only in Nyoni but also in the older midfielders. Earlier reports noted that RB Leipzig have been watching Nyoni closely, adding another layer to the deliberations.
A loan would suit Nyoni and Liverpool a lot more, giving him the playing time he needs while keeping his contract until 2030. For Aberdeen, securing the highly rated midfielder could strengthen their midfield options for the season.
