Reyna's fresh start in Strasbourg as Gladbach eyes a €3m fee

Under the floodlights of Stade de la Meinau, a lone figure steps onto the pitch, his silhouette framed against the Strasbourg skyline. Giovanni Reyna takes a new Anlauf in Straßburg, and Borussia Mönchengladbach (Gladbach) eyes an Ablöse that could ease its books.

The 23‑year‑old offensive midfielder leaves Borussia Mönchengladbach and Germany for RC Strasbourg Alsace, a move that will see him replace Valentin Barco, who departed for partner club FC Chelsea. Reyna’s market value is listed at €4.00 million.

The Ligue 1 side has agreed to a fixed transfer fee of €3 million, with realistic bonuses that could raise the total to €4 million. Gladbach therefore records an initial €1 million loss on the deal but has secured a ten‑percent sell‑on clause for any future transfer.

In the previous season Reyna featured in 20 matches, totalling 577 minutes, and started only five times. He was involved in two goals, saw his market value drop from €7 million to €4 million, earned a home‑World‑Cup call‑up and scored once in five appearances.

Last summer Gladbach paid €4 million to Borussia Dortmund for a right‑back who also struggled with injuries and never became a regular starter. The pattern of limited playing time due to recurring injuries mirrors Reyna’s recent experience.

"Gio is an excellent player, who in his year here at Borussia only hinted at his potential, and because of several injuries could not consistently show his abilities on the pitch," said sport director Rouven Schröder. "We have clearly stated that we want to change and shrink the squad, and therefore we jointly decided that a separation this summer is the right step for both sides. We wish him all the best and much success in his exciting challenge in France."
