Retirement shock: Lewis Holtby ends nearly 20-year career
Lewis Holtby, the 35‑year‑old German midfielder, announced on Monday that he is retiring from professional football, ending a career that spanned almost two decades after his contract with NAC Breda was mutually terminated. The decision was shared via his Instagram account, where he reflected on his journey and thanked supporters.
Vandaag, the 35‑year‑old Duitser posted the message on Instagram, writing: "It is time to say goodbye. After almost twenty years as a professional footballer today marks the end of my active career." He added that the sport had given him more than he ever imagined and that he would never turn his back on football.
His contract with NAC Breda was dissolved by mutual agreement, confirming earlier the club and the player had reached a consensus to part ways. The termination marked the formal conclusion of his tenure with the Dutch side.
Throughout his career Holtby featured for Schalke 04, Tottenham Hotspur, Hamburger SV, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers, VfL Bochum, Holstein Kiel and, in his final season, NAC Breda. These clubs span both the German Bundesliga and the English Premier League.
He earned three caps for the Duitse national team, representing his country on the international stage. Holtby described wearing the national shirt as one of the greatest honours of his career.
At NAC Breda he logged 31 official appearances, finding the net once during his spell. The midfielder contributed both experience and leadership in his final professional outings.
In his farewell message Holtby thanked his family, teammates, coaches and supporters, emphasizing that gratitude and humility accompany his departure. He expressed optimism for the future, stating that football will always remain part of his identity.
