Report Roma target Mexico defender Reyes with €5m opening bid
Report Roma have opened negotiations for Mexico defender Israel Reyes, sending Club America a formal €5 million offer as they search for a replacement after Zeki Celik’s surprise free‑transfer to Juventus. The 26‑year‑old, who can operate across the back line, arrived in Zapopan on June 18 ahead of the FIFA World Cup Group A clash at Guadalajara Stadium, underscoring the timing of the bid.
The Giallorossi had expected Zeki Celik to renew his contract weeks after his previous deal expired, but he instead joined Juventus on a free transfer, leaving a vacancy at right‑back. His departure forced Roma to look abroad for a defender who can fill multiple roles.
Israel Reyes, 26, is a Mexico international who can play as a right‑back, centre‑back or defensive midfielder, making him a genuine replacement for Celik. He has already featured in four matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for Mexico.
Reyes is under contract with Club America until December 2028, meaning any move would require a transfer fee. Club America listed his asking price closer to €6‑7 million, higher than the initial €5 million bid from Roma.
Sporting CP right‑back Ivan Fresneda, who turned 22 in September, is another option but his €9 million move to Sporting CP in summer 2023 makes him considerably more expensive. Fresneda has also been linked with Real Madrid, adding to his profile.
Rafik Belghali of Hellas Verona was previously mentioned as a possible right‑back, but his situation appears to be moving toward Olympique Marseille. His inclusion suggests Roma are evaluating several alternatives before finalising a deal.
The Corriere dello Sport reported that Roma have formally submitted the €5 million offer to Club America, but the club has not yet responded. Negotiations will hinge on whether the Mexican side accepts a lower fee than the €6‑7 million range they reportedly seek.
If Club America accepts the bid, Reyes could join the Giallorossi before the start of the 2026‑27 season, but the price gap and competition from Fresneda remain obstacles to completing the transfer. The move reflects Roma’s broader sport strategy to reinforce the defence.
