Report Inter's tight spending under Oaktree's looming sale

€245 million loss in 2021 still haunts Inter Milan as the Corriere della Sera reports the club is tightening its spending while Oaktree Capital prepares to sell the Serie A side. The report highlights a cautious financial approach amid a looming ownership change.

Oaktree provided a loan to former owners Suning, and when the Chinese company failed to keep up repayments, the team was effectively repossessed in the summer of 2024. That transaction transferred control of the club to the American investment fund.

The American fund has always intended to get Inter back on track, bring down debts and boost revenue so the club could be sold at a profit later. This strategic aim underpins the current fiscal discipline.

According to the Corriere della Sera, the time to sell is fast approaching, as Oaktree is now starting the process of finding buyers. The report suggests the sale process is already underway.

Inter has operated with a net positive of revenue to costs for two consecutive years, a turnaround from the €245 million loss recorded after the pandemic. This financial improvement reflects tighter budgeting.

The club's debt has been restructured and construction is set to begin on a brand‑new stadium that will be shared with rivals AC Milan. The infrastructure project signals long‑term investment despite short‑term restraint.

Although the sale is not deemed urgent, Oaktree has always planned to exit its ownership of Inter. Consequently, the club aims to keep accounts in order and limit transfer spending this summer.

On the sporting side, Inter celebrated a Coppa Italia triumph over SS Lazio on 13 May 2026, showing that on‑field success can coexist with financial prudence. The victory underscores the club’s broader ambitions.

In the wider market, Italian clubs are increasingly dependent on external investors and large‑scale projects, making Inter’s potential sale a key indicator for the Serie A financial landscape.
