Referee scandal: Haaland's goal upheld despite offside
This Sunday, in the Premier League, Manchester City won at Old Traford against Manchester United thanks to Erling Haaland. The Skyblues won 1‑0, but the goal, validated after 70 minutes with ten against eleven, sparked a refereeing scandal confirmed by Pro Ref.
The goal came in the 60th minute, after a cross from Josko Gvardiol, while Enzo Fernández was offside.
On the pitch, the VAR validated the goal, judging Haaland to be onside, but did not consider the impact of Fernández's position.
Pro Ref issued a statement admitting the error, stating that the goal should have been disallowed and noting that they had contacted United this evening. Man observed the controversy grow.
Michael Carrick, United's coach, said “I don’t understand” and criticised the complexity of the refereeing system.
Wayne Rooney called the decision “awful”, reminding that Fernández was clearly offside.
United turn to the League Cup match against Brighton on Wednesday, the derby result remaining unchanged.
