Referee appointment adds intrigue to PSV vs AZ Johan Cruijff Schaal

The Dutch football association (KNVB) announced today that Serbian referee Serdar Gözübüyük will officiate the Johan Cruijff Schaal clash between league champions PSV and cup winners AZ on Sunday, 2 August, at the Philips Stadion. The appointment marks Gözübüyük's third appearance in the season‑opening fixture, following previous assignments in 2016 and 2018.

The decision was communicated at 14:00, as indicated by the timestamp “Vandaag om 14:00”. The announcement was posted on the KNVB’s official channels.

Gözübüyük previously refereed the 2016 Johan Cruijff Schaal, when PSV faced Feyenoord and the Eindhoven side won 1‑0. Two years later he again took charge of the fixture, with Feyenoord prevailing after a penalty shoot‑out against PSV.

Assisting Gözübüyük on 2 August will be Patrick Inia and Rogier Honig, while Jeroen Manschot has been appointed fourth official. VAR duties will be handled by Pol van Boekel.

PSV have lifted the Johan Cruijff Schaal fifteen times in their history, whereas AZ have claimed the trophy once. The upcoming match therefore pits the most successful club against a solitary‑time winner.

Speculation arose that a minute of silence might be observed for the late referee Rob Dieperink, prompting comments from Johan Derksen. He said, “A feud is coming that knows no equal. Dieperink’s family finds Makkelie unwanted at the funeral. Everything has happened that we still know nothing about.”

A KNVB spokesperson later refuted the reports, stating the association had not spoken with Dieperink’s family about a minute of silence. The spokesperson also clarified that Danny Makkelie will not officiate the match and that the circulating stories were inaccurate.

The referee appointment highlights the scrutiny placed on officials in the Dutch season‑opener, especially amid recent bereavement in the refereeing community. As the Johan Cruijff Schaal approaches, the focus will shift from the officials to the on‑field battle between PSV and AZ.
