Red alert: Matthäus warns of further decline at Borussia Mönchengladbach

Lothar Matthäus, former Borussia player, warns after four defeats and zero points of an impending relegation of Borussia Mönchengladbach. The former record international says the club is in free fall, which after the split with head coach Eugen Polanski continues to show no turnaround.

Four defeats, no point

Four games, four failures, zero points – the situation that currently burns on the tree in Borussia‑Park is bleak. Under interim coach Jan‑Moritz Lichte, briefly called Jan, the team has not earned a point so far. The Foals lost a heated duel 3‑4 to 1. FSV Mainz 05 over the weekend and sit deep in the relegation zone.

Home matches are particularly problematic: after taking the lead, the Foals conceded four goals twice – once against Mainz and once against Elversberg – despite loud support from the crowd. These defensive collapses worry Matthäus, who describes the situation as “sad.”

Matthäus' sober forecast

"Borussia can definitely be saved. It is not hopeless, but it is sad what this Borussia has become – especially in the first four games," Matthäus said on Sky. The 65‑year‑old former international emphasized that the team urgently needs points after the international break, but sees little hope.

His sporting prediction is: "Based on this start, I assume they will spend the entire season fighting relegation." With this, he questions the whole season and leaves little room for optimism.

Matthäus also criticised the squad strength: "Based on the squad strength, one cannot say that they must achieve a single‑digit league position. The squad is assembled as the financial situation allows." Thus the club's financial situation is cited as a limiting factor.

In the discussion about possible succession solutions, the name Christian Streich was mentioned. Matthäus praised the former Freiburg coach and compared him to Lucien Favre, but expressed doubt that Streich would take the job. Instead, Alexander Blessin is likely, who would be hired in the Lower Rhine region.

In the coming weeks Borussia faces a tough mission in the relegation battle. Matthäus stresses that every point opportunity will be crucial to turn the ship around.
