Record sum for Carlotta Wamser: Report on Germany's biggest transfer

For Carlotta Wamser a record sum flowed to England – never before has so much money been paid for a German footballer. The transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Manchester City was documented by picture alliance / HMB Media. In an FAZ questionnaire the 23‑year‑old international talks about her new life in Manchester.

Record transfer to Manchester

The amount paid for the move to England is, according to the Media report, the highest ever spent for a German player. Never before has as much money been paid for a German footballer as for Carlotta Wamser. The figure underscores the growing financial importance of women's football in England.

Questionnaire as an app game

The FAZ questionnaire that Wamser completed is a football‑tailored version of a once‑popular board game that Marcel Proust never filled out. The questions are presented via a special app that invites players to mental and charming challenges. This format combines entertainment with deep insights into the lives of professionals in football.

Wamser moved in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen to Manchester City, after having already played for SGS Essen, Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FC Köln. She has progressed through the German youth national teams since the U15 and has so far made 14 appearances for the senior national team.

"We have conditions here that I have never seen anywhere before,"
said the German international in the interview. She emphasized that the size of the club and the league give her an unparalleled confidence.

Wamser criticised the constant juxtaposition of women's football with men's football. She asked why the sport could not simply stand on its own, similar to basketball, beach volleyball or athletics. She regards these comparisons as unnecessary and detrimental to the independence of women's football.

In training she experienced tight duels with the Japanese player Aoba Fujino, whom she described as "sooo clever and sooo good". In an international match she had to face Caroline Graham Hansen from Barcelona, who flew past her three times. Despite the challenge the team won.

Her former coach Kathrin Peter, who guided her from the U17 to the U20, placed her on the right‑back side because she is strong in running and duels. Wamser thanked her for this idea, which enabled her debut in the senior national team. In conclusion she spoke about her 80‑year‑old grandmother, who accompanied her to the airport after a short stay in Germany and imparted important values to her.
