Record champions Lyon knock out Servette Chênois in the Champions League

In the opening of the group stage of the Women’s Champions League, the Swiss champions Servette Chênois faced the record champions Lyon. The match at Stade de Genève turned into a one‑sided affair, ending with a final score of 0‑8. The cold shower for Servette was therefore inevitable.

Already in the eighth minute the first own goal came, when international Laia Ballesté mis‑directed a pass into her own net. This own goal set the tone for the rest of the encounter.

‘Hold them off and concede as few goals as possible’ was the motto of the reigning Swiss champions for the first match of the group stage.

In the first half Marie‑Antoinette Katoto scored twice (28th and 40th minute) and Melchie Dumornay hit the net shortly before the final whistle, so the half‑time score was already 0‑4.

The second half brought more goals: Katoto made it 5‑0 in the 47th minute after a pass from Lily Yohannes, Dumornay scored again in the 54th minute, and a second own goal from Magdalena Sobal (68’) did not narrow the gap. Ines Benyahia rounded off the result to 0‑8 in the 89th minute.

Next challenge for Servette

Servette travel on 1 October away to Denmark, where they will face HB Køge. The other opponents in the group stage are Leuven, AS Roma, Barcelona and Paris FC.
