Real Sociedad’s swift loan of Sarr signals defensive overhaul

Mamadou Sarr is set to become Real Sociedad’s first signing of this summer transfer window, with the club reaching a definitive loan agreement with Chelsea and the 20‑year‑old Senegalese defender. The deal, confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, will see Sarr move to Donostia immediately.
Chelsea have agreed to loan Sarr without a purchase option, after originally signing him for €10 million. Transfermarkt now values the centre‑back at €22 million. The loan will allow Real Sociedad to reinforce their defence immediately. El club confirmed the terms with both parties.
Defence reinforcement after departures
Real Sociedad have turned to the 20‑year‑old, 1.94 m tall centre‑back to fill gaps left by the departures of Caleta‑Car and Aritz. The club previously missed out on Aguerd, found Krejci too costly, and failed in Brazil to sign Jonathan Jesús. Sarr is right‑footed, making him the fourth option the club considered.
Speed of deal and behind‑the‑scenes influence
The rapid completion of the move, following a failed pursuit of a Cruzeiro defender, suggests a degree of nervousness at the Donostia side. Chelsea’s willingness to loan the player was reportedly aided by Xabi Alonso, the former Zubieta academy product now managing the Blues. ChelseaCHELSEAUnai ValverdePeriodista reported the agreement was finalised within hours.
Sarr did not feature in Chelsea’s recent Premier League match at home to Fulham and was omitted from the squad to protect the transfer. This precaution ensures the loan proceeds without complications.
Last season, Sarr began on loan at Strasbourg, performing well before Chelsea recalled him in February. He made only six appearances for the London club after his return.
The defender is a Senegal international and is slated to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations next summer. His international duties will not interfere with his immediate integration at Real Sociedad.
Sarr is expected in Donostia within the next few hours to join the squad under coach Matarazzo. He could be available for any of the six remaining league fixtures before the winter break, with the upcoming Real Madrid clash excluded from his considerations.
