Real Madrid: Vinícius Júnior sent off after VAR decision

Vinícius Júnior received a red card after a controversial VAR intervention and had to leave the pitch, even though his goal had secured the 1-0 lead against Villarreal. The incident left Real Madrid, despite the win, six points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Origin of the controversial goal

In the 71st minute, Jude Bellingham played the ball from the left side inside to Vinícius Júnior, who pressed it into the net and celebrated immediately. He put his hand to his ear, kissed the club crest, and was congratulated by coach José Mourinho.

However, the VAR intervened because Vinícius Júnior had previously pulled Nathan Saliba's hair. The goal was annulled and referee Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos showed the red card.

Reactions and aftermath

Vinícius Júnior had to be carried off the pitch by his teammates, who held him back from the former DFB star Antonio Rüdiger. Upset, he retreated to the dressing room, while Aurélien Tchouaméni said after the game: “I don’t know what’s going on with the referees, I don’t understand this red card, but the most important thing is the win.”

José Mourinho stayed away from the press conference in protest, to avoid risking a possible suspension. Shortly afterwards, Vinícius Júnior posted on Instagram: “The joy continues… Apologies to my team and the fans.”

Following the match, Real Madrid remained in second place despite the win, one point ahead of Atlético Madrid, and still sits six points behind FC Barcelona, which is coached by Hansi Flick.
