Real Madrid threatens BVB star Kobel – contract extension in danger
In the Westfalenstadion, as the lights flicker over the stands, BVB managers discuss the future of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. The club wants to extend the partnership, but the BVB star's risk is heightened by interest from Real Madrid, which threatens a possible contract extension.
BVB would like to continue working with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel for even longer. In Dortmund, the 28‑year‑old Swiss is under contract until June 30, 2028, so an early memorandum is already being discussed. The plan to keep Kobel is part of the club's long‑term strategy.
Real Madrid watches Kobel
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, the Swiss international is on Real Madrid's radar, should negotiations over a contract extension with the current number one Thibaut Courtois (contract until 2027) fail. The officials at the Blancos are closely monitoring the 28‑year‑old's situation because a top club could interfere with BVB's planned contract extension. Information from the newspaper shows that the Madrilenians have already shown interest in the past.
In coach Niko Kovac's squad, Kobel has been the undisputed number one for years. He has already played 221 league matches for the black‑and‑yellows, conceding 282 goals and keeping a clean sheet 72 times. These figures underline his importance to BVB's defence.
Other top clubs in the sights
In the past, rumours circulated that FC Bayern Munich also had the Swiss in its sights as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer. A move to the Säbener Straße, however, is off the table, as the German record champions have already identified Jonas Urbig as the heir apparent. At the same time, Premier League clubs remain very active and are considered possible alternatives for Kobel.
Whether Kobel himself is interested in a contract extension in Dortmund remains unclear. The risk of a poaching is being closely watched by BVB officials, while negotiations with Real Madrid are still speculative. A clear signal from the goalkeeper is still missing.
BVB plans early contract extension
Sport reported that BVB wants to definitely continue the partnership with the Swiss and would like to extend the memorandum early. An early agreement would give the club more planning certainty, should negotiations with Real Madrid intensify further. So far, however, there is no official decision yet.
