Real Madrid’s star trio under pressure after Atlético loss

Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Atlético de Madrid at the Metropolitano has exposed lingering doubts over the form of Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé, while new signing Yan Diomandé threatens the Brazilian’s place in the starting eleven in the near future.

Star form under the microscope

Vinícius, who has just extended his contract until 2032, was taken off the pitch immediately after the start of the second half, a move that now puts his regular spot under scrutiny. The Brazilian’s performances have been described as far from his best level, and the international break may further jeopardise his place.

Kylian Mbappé, meanwhile, has been criticised for not delivering decisive moments in key matches. France’s new manager Zinedine Zidane, who debuted in the Nations League, has said he wants Mbappé to operate as a left winger rather than a centre‑forward, a role the Frenchman has occupied at both club and country for the past two seasons.

Zidane believes Mbappé’s best output comes from the left flank, a position currently occupied by Vinícius at Real Madrid. If Mbappé proves more effective on the left for France, head coach José Mourinho may contemplate reshuffling several players to maximise results.

The contrast between the duo’s club struggles and their national‑team displays is stark; both have shown higher quality when representing their countries.

Diomandé’s arrival raises competition

Yan Diomandé arrived as Real Madrid’s most expensive signing to date and is eager to claim a place in the starting eleven. In the limited minutes he has already played off the bench, he has displayed strong ball control, dribbling ability and a decisive attitude.

Although primarily a right‑handed player, Diomandé can also perform well on the left, meaning he could directly challenge Vinícius if he lines up as a right winger while Mbappé occupies the left. A potential ‘9’ in this configuration could be Carlos Espí.

Mourinho is also considering Arda Güler for the right‑wing role; Güler can operate on the right, in midfield or as a playmaker, a position currently filled by Jude Bellingham.

It is clear that Vinícius must rediscover his top form quickly if he wishes to retain his place in the starting lineup.
