Real Madrid’s retained‑rights model fuels €120 million summer windfall

🇪🇸 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Real Madrid’s transfer policy, which keeps half of the economic rights of academy graduates, has generated over €120 million this summer, illustrating how the club turns departing prospects into financial assets. The approach underpins the club’s ability to fund future signings while preserving sporting options.

Over the past several years Real Madrid have adopted a clear policy regarding academy graduates who are unable to establish themselves in the first team. Rather than losing complete control over promising talents, the club allows them to leave while retaining a significant share of their economic rights, typically 50 %.

Exceptions include Mariano Diaz, whose move to Lyon saw Real Madrid retain 40 % after selling 60 %, and Oscar Rodriguez, where the club transferred 75 % of his rights to Sevilla. The standard approach also incorporates buy‑back or matching clauses, giving the Merengues the chance to re‑sign former players if they develop further.

More than €100 million has been generated this summer from retained stakes, with €60 million coming from Nico Paz’s sale back to Como and €20 million from Victor Munoz’s transfer to Liverpool from CA Osasuna. Additional income includes €12.5 million for Alvaro Rodriguez’s move to AFC Bournemouth, €10 million for Alex Jimenez’s permanent switch to the same club, €4 million for Fran Garcia’s deal with Real Betis, and €15 million from Mario Gila’s transfer to AC Milan after his spell at Lazio, bringing the total to over €120 million.

Future earnings could arise from pending moves of Sergio Arribas, who scored 26 goals for Almeria and has attracted interest from Ajax and SL Benfica, and Carlos Dotor, who helped Malaga earn promotion but remains owned by Celta Vigo, offering further profit potential for the Merengues’ retained‑rights strategy.
