Real Madrid’s midfield gamble: Rodri as the elusive control factor

In the Santiago Bernabéu boardroom, the hunt for a controlling midfield presence has reached a climax as Real Madrid zeroes in on Manchester City’s Spanish veteran Rodri, whose recent World Cup displays have amplified internal pressure on president Florentino Perez to act. The club believes his ability to dictate tempo matches the profile they have outlined for the role.

Rodri has slowly but surely grown into Manchester City’s top target for the Spanish midfielder role. The Spanish veteran’s gradual development has been closely monitored by the English side.

His evolution aligns with Real Madrid’s desire for a controlling presence in midfield, and his capacity to set the tempo fits the blueprint the Spanish giants have drawn up. The club sees him as the answer to the control they currently lack.

The Spanish veteran was not Florentino Perez’s preferred target for long, and indirect links with Enrique Riquelme’s presidential campaign earlier this summer contributed to that hesitation. Those connections delayed any serious pursuit.

Rodri’s performances at the World Cup generated serious internal pressure on the Real Madrid president. That pressure appears to have convinced Perez to give the green light for his arrival. The belief is that his World Cup form could translate into the midfield control Madrid need.

Earlier today it emerged that Los Blancos may be prepared to sell Aurelien Tchouameni to fund Rodri’s transfer. The potential sale would provide the financial means for the midfielder’s move.

Manchester City’s new manager Enzo Maresca discussed the World Cup Golden Ball winner in a recent interview with Ben Jacobs. He provided an update on Rodri’s future and his impending back surgery, noting that speculation around big players is normal.

Maresca said, “Every manager wants to have Rodri because he’s a top player. But now it is surgery [on a back issue], I think on Monday, and then he needs a holiday and to rest and recover, and then he will be back here with us.” He emphasized that the midfielder will return to training with City after his recovery, dismissing transfer rumours.

City do not wish to sell Rodri. Real Madrid, after a period of uncertainty, have now decided to sign the midfielder, leaving no alternative.

Rodri has just one year left on his contract in England, putting Manchester City in a weak negotiating position. Should the right offer arrive, it will be almost impossible for the club to turn it down. Manchester City’s reluctance to sell adds further complexity to any potential deal.

Rodri’s surgery will raise mild concerns in Madrid, as the player would miss the opening weeks of the new season if the transfer proceeds. The recovery timeline therefore represents a potential obstacle to an immediate impact.
